Allen is an educator and school psychologist, who lives in Rochester, New York. He has worked extensively with children of all ages in general and special education settings. He has consulted for many schools and day and residential centers throughout the world, providing training on classroom management, discipline, and motivating difficult students. As one of the internationally acclaimed authors of the original and newly revised Discipline With Dignity and many other publications, Dr. Mendler’s emphasis is on developing effective frameworks and strategies for educators, youth professionals, and parents to help youth at risk succeed.
As one of the internationally acclaimed authors of the original and newly revised Discipline with Dignity 4th Edition, Dr. Mendler has given many workshops and seminars to professionals and parents, and is highly acclaimed as a motivational speaker and trainer for numerous educational organizations. He is the author or co-author of 15 books including the just released ASCD When Teaching Gets Tough, already a best seller! Other publications include Power Struggles 2nd Edition: Successful Techniques for Educators, Motivating Students Who Don’t Care, Connecting with Students, Turning Tough Parents into Strong Partners, Discipline with Dignity for Challenging Youth and the What do I do When? series. His articles have appeared in many journals including Educational Leadership, Kappan, Reclaiming Children and Youth. He blogs for Edutopia and others. Dr. Mendler has been recognized for his distinguished teaching by the Bureau of Education and Research, and was a recipient of the coveted Crazy Horse Award for having made outstanding contributions to discouraged youth.
